How We Conducted Research to Validate Guitar Tuner App Idea

The client

Our client is a startup that wants to combine music and technology, creating a solution to meet the needs of musicians and musical enthusiasts. The company aims to realize this vision by launching a guitar tuner app offering the fastest, most accurate, and easiest way to tune guitars.

Challenges

Challenges As our client is a novice, they started doubting whether their idea is worth trying and how the audience will meet their ready-made solution. What’s more, they didn’t know where to start their journey.
That’s why, the startup turned to Wetelo, seeking product discovery services to validate their guitar tuner app idea, understand the competitiveness level in the market, and reveal customers’ needs.

Conducting competitor analysis to evaluate the degree of rivalry

To assess the degree of rivalry among producers of guitar tuner apps, we followed these steps.

First, we compiled a list of direct and indirect competitors to understand the competitiveness level in the market. We included only the most highly-rated apps suitable for beginner players.

Second, we analyzed every guitar tuner app, considering the following points: information architecture, functionality, tutorials, advertisement, additional tools and features, and instrument app support.

The results of our competitor's analysis show that, despite many guitar tuner apps, all of them have weaknesses that encourage users to seek better alternatives.

03

Conducting a questionnaire to explore novice players’ experience when playing guitar

To understand what difficulties novice players face when playing the instrument and how to improve their experience by using the tuner app, we conducted an in-depth questionnaire. We created two groups of questions for beginner players and intermediate players.

In total, the questionnaire consisted of 11 questions divided into six sections: instruments and goals, the first experience with the instrument, instrument tuning, instrument play, competitors, and advertisements.

For beginner players, we examined difficulties in playing instruments, reasons for playing, primary sources for learning, tuning challenges, app usage for tuning, and attitudes toward ads.

When it comes to intermediate players, we were interested in the reasons for playing, the use of a tuner, how they tune their guitar, issues when using mobile apps for tuning, and what apps they use for tuning.

The results of this questionnaire were used to create a user persona profile.

Four main steps in conducting research to validate the guitar tuner app idea

  • Competitor Analysis

Identification of weaknesses across competitors, indicating an opportunity for a more compelling solution.

  • Player Experience Exploration

Defined user persona of beginner players seeking guidance.

  • User-Story Mapping

Structured product plan focusing on activities and potential scenarios to enhance the user experience.

  • Technology Exploration

Insights for leveraging advanced tech to elevate the tuner app's functionality.

To create a user persona profile for the guitar tuner app, we used questionnaire results that focused on user goals, motives, needs, tasks, and pain points. This allowed us to visualize the ideal customer for the guitar tuner app.

The whole project management process started taking a lot of time and effort since we had to involve many additional instruments. We realized it is time for a change. That’s how the idea to launch our own internal product, Avanga, was born. With this tool, we were looking to automate our business processes and help our teams manage multiple projects more efficiently.

05

Creating user-story mapping for a user-centric experience

To create a user-centric product, we used user-story mapping to visualize a product plan and make it more comprehensible for our client.

Our user-story map was structured around activities, epics (tasks), and subtasks. For each user story, we provided potential scenarios to reveal pain points and find out how to address them, ensuring a delightful user experience with a tuner app.

We used a two-dimensional visual format to organize all data received from our research, including user goals, activities, and user stories. This approach allowed us to create an intuitive visual backlog that our client can understand

06

Discovering how AI, Advanced Analytics/Extending Reality can change the dynamics of the tuner

As users are not very happy with their experience of using instrument tuner apps, we’ve explored the potential of integrating AI, Advanced Analytics, and Robotics, and Extending Reality into a mobile tuner app to enhance its functionality and efficiency. Our findings led to the following conclusions:

AI can be used to improve the app’s listening capability, recognize string sounds, and facilitate digital sound processing

Advanced Analytics can assist in collecting data, such as the number of app downloads, frequency of app usage, and more.

Extended Reality can provide the app with a visual guide that will show how to adjust the instrument’s strings for precise tuning.

07

The solution diagram, user-story map, and detailed report on competitors and user persona

The discovery phase for the guitar tuner app project has been completed. As a result, our client has received a solution diagram, user-story map, detailed research on competitors, a user persona, a list of technologies suitable for the solution, a development plan, a roadmap, and core features for MVP.

With this valuable information in hand, the startup now has a better understanding of the market and the needs of potential clients. They are now prepared to start the development of the guitar tuner app.

Currently, the startup is actively seeking investors to support the launch of their advanced and innovative guitar tuner app.
